The Shape of Information

How Language Gets Hold of the World

A hearer instantly turns a speaker’s sequence of sounds into an idea of what the information is about. This idea is fragmentary and leaves him lots of room to fill in complementary details; it makes him recognize the real thing when it is in sight.

In this book, containing some basic assumptions about the brain and its mind, an empirical theory is developed tracing the processes that take place in the hearer’s awareness. Acknoqledging the systematic contribution of intonation to the speaker's information renders the use of notions like "scope of negation" superfluous.

Net Koene offers a surprisingly fresh and convincing view on the relationship between prosody and meaning.
